What size water tank do I need for off-grid camping in my caravan?
Going off-grid is a wonderful experience. There is no form of camping we love more than getting away in the bush.
But before you go, it is very important to calculate how much water you want to take.
What size water tank do I need?
We all fear being in the middle of nowhere without enough water, and with the extreme heat we are exposed to, it’s a genuine concern.
We have found there is a list of questions we need to ask ourselves:
- How many of us are travelling?
- How many litres of water do we therefore need?
- Will we be going off-road?
- How long is the trip?
However simple it sounds, it's hugely important to consider how many people will be using the caravan and how much water they will need. A general rule of thumb for a camping trip is 7 - 7.5 litres per day. This should give you enough water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene.
So for example a good guide is:
A 43L tank will offer enough water for 2 people for 3 days
An 82l tank will offer enough water for 5 people for 2 days
The length of the trip is a big factor also, with a 43L tank almost certainly being enough for 3 of you over a weekend break, but a bigger tank being a must for a week especially if most of that is going off-road.
Staying at a caravan park obviously reduces the need based on having accessible water for refilling the tanks.
One last thing to take into consideration is wanting the Polyethylene plastic, nylon or PVC tanks for the smaller vans, as the galvanised steel add a lot of weight and take up a great deal of space.
As always give the Campsmart Team a call should you have any questions or generally want to discuss this further.
