Modern Wood Carving
Wood carving has been a popular art form for a long period. This type of wood carving is a long-standing part of the furniture industry. In the present there are some of the most well-known wood carvings are made by artists like Andrianna Shamaris, Ambass Austria, and Hap Sakwa.
Aron Demetz
Aron Demetz's modern wood carving blends traditional techniques with contemporary materials, forming artworks with distinct physical appearance. His work is a combination of three techniques: carving or burning, then covering with resin to produce an interpretation of the material's texture as well as its spiritual essence. His work features human characters with strong moral and existential values. Their bodies and faces appear to be purified.
In this exhibition the artist explores the entire research of his career. His sculptures range from realistic human figures, to small bozzetti which show the artist's creative process. Born in Val Gardena, he chose the medium of wood and explores the potential of wood through his work.
Michael Pacher
Austrian artist Michael Pacher combines wood carving and painting. His entire life was in the South Tyrol region. His wood carving exemplifies the German Gothic style. His art works reflect the Italian Renaissance, and his paintings were among the first to introduce German-speaking artists to techniques used in Renaissance art. His most well-known piece is his St Wolfgang Altarpiece. It is the biggest European altarpiece in the world.
The wood sculpture of Pacher shows the influence of the northern Italian sculpture and painting. It has many resemblances with Andrea Mantegna. His blend of Italian Renaissance styles with Northern Gothic Realism has however helped him create a unique style of painting that is distinct his personal.
Jorg Zurn
Jorg Zurn's life-sized wood carving of Archangel Mike was purchased for $250,000 in New York at an art show in 2002. The artist was the oldest son of sculptor Hans Zurn the Elder. Jorg Zurn studied under his father and trained in a variety of workshops in the southern part of Bavaria.
Zurn was Zurn was a German Baroque artist who carved altars and other items for the Church. One of his masterpieces includes the five-storey High Altar of the Virgin Mary, which is located within the Church of Saint Nicholas in Uberlingen. The altar's sculptural style borrows elements from early Baroque but is a dynamic composition comparable with German Gothic sculpture.
Veit Stoss
Veit Stoss was a well-known woodcarver. He worked with a variety of clients across Europe and beyond, including Portugal as well as Italy. His sculptures were large-scale, sculptures and scenes from the lives of Christ as well as Mary. These sculptures reflect the passion of late Gothic culture. Giorgio Vasari described his work as 'a wonder in wood.'
Veit Stoss' boxwood figure shows a similarity to other great masterworks. It was made shortly following the Cracow Crucifix. It's possible that it was made prior to or following the corpora of Nuremberg. It is an excellent object to study because of its intricate sculpture and design.
Veit Stoss's Crucifixes represent a rare kind of representation. They blend naturalistic observations with a styled exaggeration. The scholars speculate that Stosss was a student in Cracow to create athletic anatomy, or perhaps the doctor he worked with studied dissections.
Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth is one the most influential artists of her time. She was a resident of St Ives in the 1930s together with a few of her close friends. Despite her inability to carve her own carvings, she continued to work on her drawings every night. These drawings explored ideas that she was unable to express in three dimensions. These drawings were influenced strings-like elements and colours, and sought to make mathematical harmony.
The fascination of her childhood with shapes and textures of nature inspired her work. In later years her love of landscapes continued to inspire her work. In 1943, she stated that her work was the result of the natural landscape. Unsatisfied with flat backgrounds, she photographed her artworks in the natural environment.
